GL-125TM Extinguishing Agent for Total Flooding Applications

HIGHLIGHTS

GL-125TM is a gaseous extinguishing agent, which can be used as a replacement for carbon dioxide and Halon 1301 in total flooding systems to protect “normally occupied” areas.

GL-125 is efficient on Class A, B and C fires, it is electrically no-conductive and leaves no residue after discharge.

GL-125 is a blend of 125 and 1-bromopropane. The latter enhances the extinguishing performance of HFC 125.

The minimum extinguishing concentration for n-heptane, determined by the cup-burner test, is 6.2% by volume. Full technical specification has been submitted to NFPA for inclusion in the NFPA 2001 Standard.

The physical properties of GL-125 allow a fast and homogeneous distribution in the protected volume, ensuring a rapid and efficient extinguishment of the fire.

Use

GL-125 is an economically advantageous choice to replace Halon 1301. Furthermore, as replacement for carbon dioxide in fixed system, it features the following advantages:

· the cost of GL-125 system is lower than a CO2 system

· GL-125 can be discharged in 10 seconds, allowing faster knockdown than CO2 and reducing the damage caused by the fire

· the relationship between space/weight and extinguishing capability is of essence

· lower toxicity level

Although any potential fire risk present its own particular complexities, the choice of GL-125 in a fire protection system is suitable when:

· an inert and electrical noconductive extinguishing agent is required

· the clean-up of another media would represent a problem

· a rapid extinguishment of the fire is desired

· the risks to life posed by CO2 are to be eliminated.

Environmental impact

The Montreal Protocol, which establishes the actions to control emissions of substances damaging the ozone layer, banned the manufacture of Halons due to their high Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP). GL-125, unlike Halon 1301 (ODP = 12-16), does not deplete the stratospheric ozone layer (ODP = 0). Also the low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and low Atmospheric Lifetime (ALT) make it an acceptable replacement.

Toxicity

GL-125 is an extinguishing agent to be used in normally “non occupied” areas.

Its acute toxicity (LC50 for 15 minutes is 50%) is far lower than the recommended concentrations of use.

The cardiac sensitization is the first evident symptom when exposed to halogenated extinguishing agents. The NOAEL (No Observable Adverse Effect Level) and LOAEL (Lowest Observed Adverse Effect Level) values for GL-125 are respectively 4% and 6%.
